Maurice Revello n’est plus…
Le Festival International Espoirs de Toulon vient de perdre son fondateur. Maurice Revello s’est éteint ce vendredi à l’âge de 82 ans après s’être battu contre la maladie pendant deux années.
Véritable passionné de football, Maurice Revello avait créé le Festival en 1967 au moment où il était membre du Sporting Club de Toulon. Avant de reprendre les destinées du tournoi en 1974. Entre-temps, Maurice Revello avait rejoint le Racing Club de Toulon, club créé en 1970. Au sein de ce club, il avait notamment entraîné plusieurs joueurs prometteurs comme Régis Roch, Eric Castagnino, Régis Fontani, Thierry Rabat ou encore Patrick Decugis.
A travers le Festival, Maurice Revello souhaitait véhiculer une certaine image du football en ouvrant son tournoi à tous les continents. Il est notamment le premier à avoir permis à la Chine de connaître le niveau international en invitant la nation asiatique à participer au Festival en 1979. Visionnaire, Maurice Revello rêvait d’organiser à Toulon un match de la paix entre Israël et la Palestine.
Sa fierté fut également d’avoir joué un rôle important dans le sacre de l’Argentine lors de la Coupe du Monde 1978. En 1975, ces mêmes Argentins avaient brillamment remporté le Festival et à en croire leur sélectionneur César Luis Menotti, cette victoire à Toulon fut primordiale dans leur quête du Mondial : « Le titre remporté à Toulon a généré énormément d’enthousiasme en Argentine. Cela a prouvé aux dirigeants de la fédération qu’il était important de se pencher sérieusement sur les catégories de jeunes ». Outre cette fameuse génération argentine, de nombreux grands joueurs internationaux sont passés par le Festival : Zinédine Zidane, David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Jean-Pierre Papin, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rui Costa, Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard, Hristo Stoitchkov et d’autres encore…
Et c’est certainement la plus grande réussite de Maurice Revello : avoir contribué au développement et la structuration du football destiné aux catégories de jeunes. Le tout, en ayant accompli cette tâche depuis sa région adorée. Né à Pignans, Maurice Revello avait passé son enfance rue Garibaldi dans le quartier de Besagne à Toulon. Une ville qu’il portait profondément au sein de son cœur…

Maurice Revello, the Toulon Tournament founder, dies at 82
Maurice Revello, the Toulon Tournament founder, died at the age of 82 on this Friday morning following a two-year battle with the disease.
He created the Toulon Tournament in 1967 during his time at the Sporting Club de Toulon. Then, he organized the second edition of the “Festival” in 1974. Between these two dates, Maurice Revello went into management at the Racing Club de Toulon, a club created in 1970. He was the coach of several promising young players like Régis Roch, Eric Castagnino, Régis Fontani, Thierry Rabat or Patrick Decugis.
Throughout the Toulon Tournament, Maurice Revello wanted to gather national teams from all around the world. For example, he was the first to allow China to discover the international level in 1979. Remembered as a visionary, he always dreamt to organize in Toulon a peace match between Israel and Palestine.
Also, he was proud that the Toulon Tournament played a key role in the Argentina success in the 1978 World Cup. In 1975, the South American side won the Festival. According to the former Argentina head coach, Cesar Luis Menotti, the Toulon Tournament was very important for his team. “The title we won in Toulon generated such an enthusiasm in Argentina and it finally proved to FA officials that it was important to properly organize youth football.” Except these Argentinian players, many of the biggest and most renowned international footballers have made their mark in Toulon : : Zinédine Zidane, David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Jean-Pierre Papin, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rui Costa, Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard, Hristo Stoitchkov and many more.
Maurice Revello can take pride in the fact that he played a big role in the development and structure in what youth football is today. He achieved that from his favourite place. Born in Pignans, Revello spent his childhood in Toulon. A city he truly loved…
