Maurice Revello Tournament top 100 players : 40th to 36th
On the occasion of its 50th edition, which will take place from 3 to 16 June 2024, the Maurice Revello Tournament is opening its history book. Since it was founded in 1967, the competition has seen many talented players. More than 2,000 have gone on to become senior internationals, and some of them have written football history. To celebrate its anniversary, the Tournament is updating its top 100, created in 2017. Until 29 March, our website will be displaying the updated rankings of the 100 greatest players to have taken part in the Tournament. And it continues today, with the rankings from 40th to 36th place.
40th : Emmanuel Petit (France) - 1990
The most successful nation in the history of the Maurice Revello Tournament, with 13 victories in 44 appearances, France has often shone in the competition... but has also missed out on a few occasions. Such was the case in 1990. Three-time champions Les Bleuets finished a disappointing fifth after two wins, a draw and a crushing 7-3 defeat by England. Emmanuel Petit is part of that team. The midfielder, who scored one goal during the competition, is already familiar with the professional world, having made his top-flight debut with AS Monaco two years ago. He stayed in the Principality until 1997, playing almost 300 matches and winning a French league title. His honours list then grew at Arsenal, where he won the 1998 Premier League. But it was with Les Bleus that he enjoyed his greatest successes. Capped 63 times, he was part of the golden generation that won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.
39th : Kolo Touré (Ivory Coast) - 2000
Winners in 2010, finalists in 2017... Ivory Coast is the African nation with the best record at the Maurice Revello Tournament. In addition to these two generations, the team that took part in the 2000 edition is not to be outdone. Fourth in the final standings, the Elephants put in two fine performances that year, beating Mexico (1-0) and then holding off Japan (2-2). At the helm of the team was Jean-Marc Guillou, who also manages ASEC Mimosas, a club from which several of the players in the squad hail. This is particularly true of Kolo Touré. The defender trained at the Ivorian academy took off two years later for England, where he played for Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool between 2002 and 2016, winning a total of 7 trophies. With the national team, he also won the African Cup of Nations in 2015 and remains the second most capped player in history with 120 caps.
38th : Jamie Carragher (England) - 1998
Along with Frank Lampard, he was the other young player to become a legend in England's 1998 squad. However, the Young Three Lions did not have their best tournament, finishing a disappointing sixth after drawing one, winning one and losing one of their three games. In the summer of 1998, Jamie Carragher completed his first real season in the professional world with his training club, Liverpool. It was the first of many, as he would never leave the Reds. During 17 seasons at the highest level, the defender remained the man of a single club, making 737 appearances and becoming the second most capped player in Liverpool's history. He won 11 titles, including the Champions League in 2005, but never the Premier League, perhaps the only regret of his brilliant career. He made 38 appearances for England and took part in three World Cups in 2002, 2006 and 2010.
37th : Marquinhos (Brazil) - 2014
Holders of the title after being crowned champions in 2013, Brazil made it two in a row a year later. In 2014, the Seleção once again won the competition with a perfect record: 5 matches, 5 wins, 18 goals scored, only 4 conceded... The Auriverde team is a real steamroller, giving its opponents no chance, as demonstrated by its victories over Qatar (7-0) and France in the final (5-2). Seven players from this team went on to become internationals. Marquinhos is one of them. In the summer of 2014, the defender was already well known in France, having played for Paris Saint-Germain for a season after a brief spell with AS Roma. Ten years on, 'Marqui' is still wearing the PSG shirt and his list of honours has grown considerably, with 28 trophies to his name, including 8 league titles with the Parisian club. The scorer of 38 goals in more than 430 games played, he has also often been on the scoresheet in important games. Caped 84 times and winner of the Copa America in 2019 with Brazil, he is also an irremovable member of his national team.

36th : Alisson Becker (Brazil) - 2013
A year before the 2014 title, Brazil had already won the Maurice Revello Tournament in 2013. With 4 wins from 5 games, the Seleção had a near-perfect record, conceding just 2 goals during the competition. This solidity is down to their defence, but also to their goalkeeper, Alisson Becker. The Brazilian goalkeeper already has his size and his surgical footwork. A member of SC Internacional at the time, he waited another three years before moving to Europe. His first stop was AS Roma, where he shone for two seasons and attracted the interest of Liverpool, who decided to make a move for him in 2018. Since then, Alisson has become the first-choice goalkeeper for a side that has enjoyed a string of successes under coach Jurgen Klopp. In total, the goalkeeper and the Reds have won six trophies, including the Champions League in 2019 and the club's first Premier League title for 30 years in 2020. Like Marquinhos, he won the Copa America with Brazil in 2019.
