Maurice Revello Tournament top 100 players : 25th to 21st
On the occasion of its 50th edition, which will take place from 3 to 16 June 2024, the Maurice Revello Tournament is opening its history book. Since it was founded in 1967, the competition has seen many talented players. More than 2,000 have gone on to become senior internationals, and some of them have written football history. To celebrate its anniversary, the Tournament is updating its top 100, created in 2017. Until 29 March, our website will be displaying the updated rankings of the 100 greatest players to have taken part in the Tournament. And it continues today, with the rankings from 25th to 21st place.
25th : Maxwell Scherrer (Brazil) - 2002
Adriano, Daniel Alves, Diego, Maxwell... In 2002, Brazil won the Maurice Revello Tournament with an incredible generation. Unbeaten, the Seleção scored 9 goals, conceded just one and finished with a convincing victory in the final against Andrea Barzagli and Federico Balzaretti's Italy (2-0). A total of 7 players from this team went on to become senior internationals. Among them was Maxwell Scherrer. The left-back was a familiar face to European football followers at the time, having just completed his first season with Ajax Amsterdam. The start of a career rich in trophies. From Cruzeiro, where he made his professional debut, to Inter and FC Barcelona, to Paris Saint-Germain, where he retired, he collected a total of 32 trophies, making him one of the most successful players in the history of football. It was at PSG (15 titles) and Barça (8 titles) that he reaped his greatest rewards.
24th : Andrea Barzagli (Italy) - 2002
Beaten by Maxwell's Brazil in the final of the 2002 Maurice Revello Tournament, Italy came very close to their first title in the competition. Led by 5 future senior internationals such as Andrea Barzagli, Christian Maggio, Federico Balzaretti, Simone Pepe and Angelo Palombo, the Squadra Azzurra would have to wait another 6 years before finally winning the title in 2008. In the meantime, some members of the team have already enjoyed great success. Barzagli, for example, was crowned world champion with Italy in 2006 while at Palermo. The centre-back then joined Wolfsburg in the summer of 2008, and a few months later became German champions with his club. But it was at Juventus that he piled up the titles. Between 2011 and 2019, he won 16 trophies, including six consecutive Scudetti, and contested two Champions League finals in 2015 and 2017. In addition to the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Barzagli, who has 73 caps to his name, also took part in the Euro 2012 final with his country.
23rd : Ricardo Carvalho (Portugal) - 1998
Pekerman, Riquelme, Samuel and Scaloni's Argentina beat France in the 1998 Maurice Revello Tournament, and Portugal put in another fine performance. The Lusinatian team finished 3rd in the overall standings after impressive victories over Brazil (1-0) and Germany (1-0). Coached by Jesualdo Ferreira, they had 7 future senior internationals in their ranks, including Ricardo Carvalho. The central defender was a key member of the team, having just made his professional debut for FC Porto. He won 7 trophies with his club and played a part in the incredible 2003-04 season in which the Dragons won the league and Champions League double under José Mourinho. Carvalho went on to enjoy many more successes, with Chelsea (7 titles) and Real Madrid (2 titles) among others. The tenth most capped player in his country's history, with 89 games played, he also won Euro 2016 in France.

22nd : Claudio Taffarel (Brazil) - 1987
Although Brazil "only" finished 3rd overall in the 1987 edition of the Maurice Revello Tournament, the Seleção made their mark that year with their defensive solidity. In 4 matches played, they did not concede a single goal. They owed this impregnability in part to their No. 1 goalkeeper at the tournament, Claudio Taffarel, named best goalkeeper of the edition. The illustrious Brazilian was just 21 at the time, and joined the senior national team just a few months after taking part in the Tournament. In Brazil (Internacional, Atlético Mineiro) and in Europe (Parma, Reggina, Galatasaray), he became an indestructible figure in goal. In 2000, he won an historic quadruple with the Turkish club, winning the league, UEFA Cup, Turkish Cup and European Supercup, as well as 2 Italian Cups with Parma. With 101 caps, he is currently the 7th most-capped player in the history of the Seleção, with whom he won two Copa America titles in 1989 and 1997, as well as the 1994 World Cup.
21st : Laurent Blanc (France) - 1986
In 1986, the French team entered the Maurice Revello Tournament as two-time defending champions. The second team in the history of the competition to have achieved this feat, along with Brazil, they were aiming for an unprecedented treble. But their dream was dashed in the final against Bulgaria and a certain... Emil Kostadinov... Beaten 1-0, Les Bleuets failed despite fielding a talented team, one of whose players would go on to enjoy a great career: Laurent Blanc. The central defender had already settled in at Montpellier, where he would become a veritable legend, making almost 300 appearances and winning the French Cup in 1990. After winning a league and cup double with AJ Auxerre in 1996, he went on to play for Barcelona, Inter, Olympique de Marseille and Manchester United, with whom he won the Premier League in 2003. With 97 caps, he is one of the top 10 most capped players in the history of Les Bleus, with whom he won the World Cup-Euro double in 1998 and 2000, and of whom he later became coach.
